inklingroom proudly presents Redux & Respair - a debut album by experimental duo lil replica.
Their first LP is an unconventionally structured mosaic of sonic textures made of ethereal vocals, dislocated micro-chopped piano loops, blips and glitches layered onto each other, making for a disrupted yet emotional listening experience. ‘lil replica’ draws on a broad sonic pallet of IDM, electronica and glitch with elements of noise and sound collage, crafting something raw and intimate. Presenting ten remarkable tracks that sit balanced at the intersection of pop and experimental sound, drawing as much on film editing, music concrete and field recording as much as from jazz, choral chants and mainstream beats. In a fragment from their manifesto, the duo states: ”it isn't ugly or unwanted; here, in this heroic moment, it is tender and sympathetic.”
lil replica edited themselves into existence. Redux & Respair is the culmination of tweaking, chopping, filtering, exporting, and re-exporting free improvisations centred around voice and piano, feeding sections into now primitive AIs, until something like a new musical language dropped out the other end… lil replica make everything themselves - all sounds come from their own processes of self-imposed limitation (rejecting the limitlessness of today's DAWs where any sound is immediately available).
lil replica are often eerie and alien but never cold or overly cerebral - their music has a passionate, burning humanity, an attempt to chart new feelings and new ways of thinking about song structures.
In their debut album ‘Redux & Respair’, glitch isn't used to distort away from reality but instead to harness and expose the fragile beauty in human gestures. Commenting on their process, the duo say: “...What would it look like to leave the pencil markings in? Or better still, to sketch in pen, and then make the final, clean-edged markings in pencil? ”
