The B. Christopher Band - 106 Miles to Chicago (2024)

Gitarist B. Christopher is een grote fan van The Blues Brothers. Hij werd 44 jaar geleden door de gelijknamige film over Joliet Jake en Elwood Blues op het spoor van de blues en de soul gebracht.

Om zijn inspiratiebronnen te eren heeft hij nu het album ‘106 Miles To Chicago’ uitgebracht met een zevental nummers, dat destijds op het repertoire van The Blues Brothersr stond.

The B. Christopher Band bestaat naast gitarist B. Christopher uit Anton Fig (drums, Joe Bonamassa), Nick Douglas (bas), Bruce Katz (keyboards), Andy Snitzer (tenorsaxofoon, baritonsaxofoon), Ryan Keberle (trombone), Studebaker John (harmonica), Eddie Testa (zang), Sharlotte Gibson (backing vocals), Tony Kadleck (trompet) en op 1 nummer Tom “Bones” Malone van de originele Blues Brothers bezetting (baritonsaxofoon).

De nummers worden vrijwel op de zelfde wijze uitgevoerd als de versies van The Blues Brothers met slechts lichte verschillen.

Gestart wordt met een versie van Floyd Dixon’s Hey Bartender. Een lekkere cover met prima zang van Eddie Testa en de harmonica van Studebaker John. B. Christopher zorgt voor gemeen bijtend gitaarwerk. Zijn vurige slide geeft Solomon Burke’s Everybody Needs Somebody To Love net wat extra’s. De pompende versie van Sweet Home Chicago wordt gevolgd door de pompende Henry Mancini cover Peter Gunn waarin de blazers de hoofdrol stelen.

Taj Mahal’s She Caught The Katy klinkt loom en funky waarin B. Christopher’s bijtende gitaar prima past. Gimmie Some Lovin’ van the Spencer Davis Group klinkt zoals het hoort: energiek en soulvol! Het is even wennen wanneer je Otis Redding’s I Can’t Turn You Loose in een instrumentaal, Booker T. & The MG’s-achtig jasje voorbij hoort komen.

Floyd Dixon’s “Hey Bartender” makes a fantastic introduction to the album. Testa’s vocals are perfectly fitted and B. Christopher’s guitar solo absolutely cooks. Electricity and excitement fill the air when the band breaks out “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”. With the great Bruce Katz on keys, and guest appearance by Bones Malone, this is an absolute favorite. Hearing the horns kick in with that oh-so-familiar bassline on “Peter Gunn” puts a giant smile on my face. I dig the interesting licks B. Christopher lays down on this. The band knocks that Spencer Davis Group 1966 hit “Gimme Some Lovin’” out of the park as well.

B. Christopher Band’s 106 Miles to Chicago pays an honorable tribute to the world-renowned blues duo The Blues Brothers. It’s definitely a record I’d recommend. It’s a fun listen.
