A powerful Southern soul/R&B singer in his own right, Roy Lee Johnson will always have a place in the rock history books as the author of “Mr. Moonlight,” a song famously covered by the Beatles and released on the 1964 album BEATLES FOR SALE. Recorded when he was the guitarist for Piano Red (at that point performing under the name Dr. Feelgood & The Interns), the song was the b-side of the minor hit “Dr. Feelgood,” but became a cult favorite on the British beat and mod scenes. Johnson continued recording in subsequent decades for Columbia, Okeh, Stax, and other labels and maintained a steady gigging schedule.
