Igor Yakovenko, Petr Ivshin - Pantheon (2024) [Hi-Res]

“Pantheon” is a musical exploration of the myths of the gods, idols, bogatyrs and rituals of the ancient Slavs.
The information we have about the pagan period is rather scarce. Many facts are not facts at all. All it is speculations or interpretations.

Before acceptance of Christianity in Russia there was no writing, and myths from primary sources in any way could not be kept. Therefore we recreate a vision of Slavic mythology, relying on our own rethinking of stories of travelers and later surviving ancient chronicles.

We have not used Slavic folklore directly for inspiration. The music we created is rather a cycle of our reflections, adapted with the help of modern musical instruments and means. In the process of working on the album we familiarized ourselves with the works of A. Veselovsky, A. Potebny, A. Gilferding, as well as with the materials of thematic conferences. This was the starting point for our inspiration.

The cover and illustrations for each play in the album were made by the contemporary artist Nestor Engelke, who works in the technique of wood painting. Using an axe, Nestor carves a pattern on the wooden surface that resembles a “reverse” relief. In his personal projects, he often constructs the habitats of fictional characters, so the series of works “Pantheon” has become a kind of continuation of musical fiction.
