1954, Johnny Cash s’installe à Memphis où il travaille comme vendeur d’électro-ménager. L’année suivante, il enregistre deux compositions pour le producteur Sam Philips, Hey Porter! et Cry, Cry, Cry, qui font une entrée remarquée dans les charts country. Mais ce sont Folsom Prison Blues et I Walk the Line, ses singles suivants, qui vont propulser le chanteur au rang de star. Artiste engagé, formidable conteur, « l’Homme en noir » est une véritable icône de la musique américaine comme en attestent les nombreuses œuvres – films, livres et chansons –, qui lui sont consacrées.
