Maja Kjær si Orkester plays forbidden instrumental folk music . No matter how you look at it, the orchestra consists of forbidden elements - historically speaking, that is. In Denmark, the violin used to be a symbol of the devil, the drum was not a "real" instrument, the cimbalom was connected with outcasts, and brass instruments weren't always "folky" enough for folk music.

It is not the usual "Nordic Folk" instrumentation that characterises Maja Kjær si Orkester - the piano has been replaced by a cimbalom, instead of a upright bass Maja went for the tuba, and the drum kit is replaced by percussion that embraces both the deep, primal power and the bright winter mornings. The fiddles remain, since they are the glue that makes this crooked tapestry of sound stand straight. The featured guests on the trumpet, the clarinet and the soprano saxophone add an extra tweak to the color palette.
