The main interest here surrounds the first commercial recording of the 1910 Music for Orchestra.

Premiered in Munich in January 1911, it's an ambitious and frequently arresting creation.

Caetani secures a polished and shapely rendering, though a touch more thrusting purpose might not have come amiss. That observation also holds true for the performance of its eponymous and altogether more tightly knit bedfellow from two years later (both pieces share some thematic material).

In the Music for Violin and Orchestra Sergey Stadler plays with admirable precision and sensitivity, though rather greater passion and tonal warmth wouldn't come amiss. This is fascinating and frequently intoxicating repertoire – do to try it. Play 'spot the influence' and you might come up with names as diverse as Wagner, Mahler, Richard Strauss, Debussy, Berg, Reger, Schreker, Hindemith and Szymanowski. The sound is spacious and true.
