Stéphane Grappelli - Saga Jazz: A Froggy Plays In London Town (2003)

In 1939, war brutally separated Reinhardt and Grappelli. But more than that, it created a four-year hiatus for the most original adventure in European jazz: the ‘Quintette du Hot Club de France’ with its all-strings formula. When war broke out, both musicians were in England. Django, already less than happy with the language of Shakespeare, returned post-haste to Paris to be with his own people. Stéphane preferred to remain in London. This album tells how the violinist broke lightly free from the influence of the divine gypsy and, alongside George Shearing, invented a more ethereal way of playing, one that was more modern. Until that magic day, at the beginning of 1946, when they were reunited on the marvellous Nuages.
