It's possible to view Julie Lyon's career in three distinct episodes. First as a fiery rock and blues vocalist , then as a bone fide jazz chanteuse, leading swinging bands, mostly including her husband drummer Tom Cabrera, every night in jazz clubs. Finally, her current activities since arriving in New York more than a decade ago include performing creative, modern jazz material for which she has written poetic lyrics, collaborating with composers including Jack DeSalvo, whose music, graced by Julie's lyrics, appears on Julie's album New View. It's import to emphasize that Julie's performances often contain material from different parts of her career and she currently sings with straight ahead big bands and has held the vocal chair the the Downtown oriented 12 Houses Orchestra. To get back to the recording at hand, New View, this is a masterwork of sorts featuring Julie's lyrics over DeSalvo's music. His unique arrangements including rhythm section with guitar and three horns both emphasizing the power of Julie's magnificent voice, the solos from the ensemble and the rich harmonic color of the music. All enveloped in the sglittering sound mix of Larry Hutter. Besides Tom Cabrera on drums and DeSalvo on guitar, Julie has gathered a remarkable ensemble with Lee Odom on alto sax, Matt Lambiase on trumpet, the trombonist George McMullen, pianist Bob Rodriguez and double-bassist Lou Pappas.
