"Dan Forrest captured the global essence of Psalm 100 in his joyful and expansive Jubilate Deo." "His use of seven languages and traditional instruments of each culture transports the listener from the cultures of the ancient Near East to Asia, from South Africa with its vocal and drum traditions to Latin America."
Forrest said that the seven languages of the work illustrate that the whole earth is reverberating with worship, a theme he saw throughout the text.
Psalm 100.
Although part of the work is performed in traditional Latin, Forrest wanted to convey the feeling that all nations and groups of people praise the Lord in different languages.
"We know other cultures so well these days, and we appreciate their traditions and what they've brought to the culture," Forrest said. "I didn't want to limit myself to just [Latin] if I was going to say, 'Make a joyful noise, the whole earth.'"
Jubilate Deo contains a duet performed in Hebrew and Arabic, a pair that, according to Forrest, had a double meaning. Forrest uses two languages, some of the oldest in the world, in addition to traditional Middle Eastern music, to represent the worship of God in the past.
"The satisfying and festive seventh movement unites the entire earth, singing as one: omnis terra, jubilee!" said Cook.
