Leon Phal - No Pain, No Champagne (2024) [Hi-Res]

The album “No Pain/No Champagne” is the result of discussions with winemaker Stéphane Regnault, who asked Léon Fahl to illustrate four of his cuvées. Recorded at La Frette Studios, this album is a departure from the ultra-modernity of Fahl's previous works. He infuses his jazz with a vintage palette and seeks out oddities and quirks that take the music in a different direction. The album features jumpy hip-hop with Oddisee, soulful lyrics with Wolfgang Valbrun and worn-out house. Fal moves away from rigid orthodoxy and combines the jazz tradition with elements of rap, electro and modern treatments of a vintage groove. In these complex but balanced compositions, Fal plays saxophone with traditional jazz harmonies and seeks out his cool and bright flavors in unexpected variations. The album becomes a great look at the legacy on which Fal grew up, and combines grooves from the past with a contemporary setting.
