Coleman Hawkins - Saga Jazz: European Delights 1933-1939 (Coleman Hawkins) (2006)

After ten years of loyal service in Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra, Coleman Hawkins recorded his first session as a leader in the Fall of 1933. By the end of March 1934, one can find him in England where he joins Jack Hylton’s band. He was to stay in Europe for five years – in Scandinavia, but also, especially, in Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, and France… – where he would record a number of gems that are reissued here, as he met the flower of European Jazz, such as Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli… His journey on the old continent is cut short by the beginning of the War in 1939 and our selection ends in a blaze of glory with the mythic recording of Body and Soul, waxed as soon as he had returned to America.
