Houston's Summer Program for Youthful Musicians, founded in the 1970s by jazz drummer and bandleader Bubbha Thomas, was a pivotal initiative for young musicians in the Houston area. Thomas, already an established session drummer who played with iconic artists like O.V. Wright and the Mighty Clouds of Joy, created the Summer Jazz Workshop as an extension of his commitment to jazz education. The program provided budding musicians with hands-on training, fostering a new generation of talent.

During this era, Houston was also home to the legendary Kashmere Stage Band (KSB), an ensemble founded by Conrad O. Johnson. KSB, formed by students from Kashmere High School, gained international acclaim with their electrifying performances, despite their humble beginnings with LPs pressed in limited quantities. Both Thomas’ Lightmen and Johnson’s KSB represent Houston’s rich jazz history, showcasing the transformative power of music education. Bubbha Thomas’ legacy lives on, not only in his recordings but in the lives of countless students he mentored before his passing in 2020.

Their music, particularly this record, is noted for its deep grooves, improvisational style, and rhythmic complexity, which helped solidify Bubbha Thomas and The Lightmen’s status in the underground jazz scene of Houston and beyond.
