Herb Geller was a rising jazz star in the U.S. during the 1950s when the sudden death of his wife (pianist Lorraine Geller) caused him to relocate to Europe, where he has lived ever since. As a result, his contributions have been unjustly overlooked in his native land, even though he has kept very busy recording and performing in Europe. These 1996 sessions, issued by Hep (a Scottish label), feature Geller with a potent rhythm section consisting of guitarist Ed Harris, bassist Thomas Biller, and drummer Heinrich Köbberling. Three of Geller's four originals were written for his musical Josephine Baker, while Harris contributed the lyrical bossa nova "Mr. Bill." Sticking to alto sax for most of the disc, Geller proves himself to be a capable soprano saxophonist in the gorgeous interpretation of "A Handful of Stars." Harris' work is sublime, comparable to that of Jim Hall or Ed Bickert in their recordings with Paul Desmond. Warmly recommended.
