The English trombonist Mark Nightingale, inspired by J.J. Johnson and the trombonists of the bop era, plays five standards and five of his originals with skill and creativity within the boundaries of the genre. Accompanied by pianist Dado Moroni, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton, Nightingale displays an impressive technique, an attractive tone and the ability to think fast. His own compositions are so smooth and logical that they could be mistaken for standards. Bop fans will enjoy this import from the German label Mons. © Scott Yanow
