Finn Rees - Feel The Sun - EP (2026) [Hi-Res]

Finn Rees is a jazz keyboardist, composer and producer from Naarm / Melbourne and a prominent figure in the city’s DIY scene. Known for expressive keys playing and a genre-blending approach, he tours widely as a solo artist and as half of the dance duo Close Counters, and is also a go-to keyboardist for many of his peers. Following his acclaimed debut album Dawn Is A Melody two years ago and last year’s collaborative two-track release with SHOLTO, he returns to the label Mr Bongo with the solo EP Feel The Sun: three dynamic tracks plus a dancefloor remix. The release is built around the ability to draw positive energy from life through the cycle of the seasons and to value the present moment.

“Another Spring” is a Brazilian-inspired, uplifting jazz fusion dancer about the return of the sun and spring as a symbol of inner creative force. It opens with echoes of César Camargo Mariano, then moves into an orchestrated dance number in an odd 7/4 time (a nod to Zimbo Trio), alternating a punchy horn motif with a rich string ensemble. The nine-minute title track is a jazz dance odyssey that brings orchestrated elements and lush horns to the dancefloor, in the spirit of Harry Thumann and David Matthews Big Band; Finn wrote it in 2022, once much of the world could move freely again. “Torn” leans into jazzy hip hop, with a groove held down by drummer Lucky Pereira and upright bassist Junior Terry and a blistering flute solo by Erica Tucceri; it is a tribute to A Tribe Called Quest and Bobbi Humphrey. Its melody of flute, tenor sax and Moog synth gradually crescendos through different keys to a climax before crashing back down. The EP closes with a clubbier remix of “Feel The Sun” by Finn and his Close Counters partner Allan McConnell: cosmic, synth-heavy and full of bubbling energy.
