Alvorada - Faz Tempo (2024) [Hi-Res]

This translation of Faz Tempo hints at several layers of meaning behind the music on this album. The literal meanings of the two words (the verb “fazer” means “to do” or “to make”, whilst “tempo” means “time”) also carry certain connotations. The idea of taking time – the time required to create music, to foster creativity, to nurture friendships, to make space for self-reflection – is a strong theme throughout these compositions. Time apart is another element: the wistful sense of separation, and the joy of returning and reuniting – whether that be with people, places, our own inner selves, or a wider sense of spiritual connection. Within such a rhythmically rich context as Brazilian music, the exploration of musical time and rhythm is, of course, a vital aspect. Another, more philosophical undercurrent is the ephemeral nature of music and, within that, our relationship to time itself.

The phrase “it’s been a while” evokes a nostalgic sense of looking back which concurrently illuminates and grounds our sense of awareness of the present moment. In the same way, Faz Tempo is an album which serves to enrich Alvorada’s sense of connection to its choro origins, whilst establishing it firmly and boldly in its contemporary present. This recording documents the evolution of the band’s collective voice, providing a bridge between the group’s history, and its current sound – a voice which continues to grow and unfold into the future.
