Four years after his first album, Leos Naturals (2020), Chicago organist Jimmy Lacy returns with a long-awaited follow-up, Leos Ultras. The album was conceived and recorded in a corner of a warehouse turned into a music lab, Homan Gardens. It radiates joy, depth, and vivid colors. The music features many instruments: keys, clarinet, kalimba, saxophone, melodica, flute, tambourine, and drum machine. The songs feel warm and familiar, like beloved clothes cherished over the years.

Much changed over those years. Lacy’s first daughter was born, followed by his second 17 months later. Daily life became more intense, but he never lost faith in the melodies that played in his mind. “I knew the music would be there when I had the time. It felt calming to think that way,” Lacy says.

Patience paid off. Leos Ultras is his most refined album. It is full of detail, beauty, and improvisation, with shades of spiritual jazz. The music is light yet deep, playful and touching, created in quiet moments as a celebration of life, love, and Leo.
