Diane Barbé - musiques tourbes (2024) [Hi-Res]

Diane Barbé is a sound artist, instrument builder, and field recordist. In the project musiques tourbes, she combines the sounds of wetlands with nature-inspired synthesis.

Her work focuses on the connection between different species and caring for the planet as a living space. Barbé explores experimental music, listening practices, and activism. She draws attention to delicate natural phenomena that, despite being subtle, vividly demonstrate the impact of human activity while celebrating life.

In recent years, Barbé has explored the sounds of European wetlands. This led to the creation of musiques tourbes — "bog music." It features animal rhythms, wind-like hums, and electronic imitations, transporting listeners to the vibrant world of humid zones.

musiques tourbes is a sonic map of the bogs. It reflects the chaotic patterns of drifting algae. Listeners are caught between the real and the imagined, the organic and the electronic. This experience offers a fresh perspective on the world, showing how listening and technology can nurture collective imagination and reshape our relationship with nature.

The project is rooted in field recordings, but its central idea is remembrance. It is a way of preserving the sounds of the landscape.
