Travis Shook - Travis Shook (1993)

Travis Shook's debut as a leader features four standards and four lesser-known pieces and find the 22-year-old pianist displaying very impressive technique and (almost as importantly) plenty of self-restraint. His style shows slight echoes of McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock, but also builds and releases tension in a colorful fashion reminiscent of Ahmad Jamal. Shook acquits himself well in the trio outing with bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Tony Williams, and even maintains the spotlight during the two intense appearances by veteran altoist Bunky Green. Shook's solo version of "My Foolish Heart" is a high point.
