Cheeky, sensual and highly topical. That is 'Bonjour Liberté' by Marijke Jährling. On her new album, the German-Dutch singer focuses on the two most famous 'Kurts' of the Weimar cultural scene. On the one hand, the writer Kurt Tucholsky, a self-confessed red wine drinker and misogynist. On the other hand, the brilliant composer Kurt Weill.

Both have left behind an extensive body of work that has inspired many artists. However, Marijke presents a premiere with 'Bonjour Liberté'. She has not only combined her own new settings of Tucholsky's texts with songs by Kurt Weill, but has also translated all the texts into French. Although the two never met there directly, Paris played an important role for both of them.

As a place of longing and refuge from the impositions of their era', explains Marijke, referring to the flight from the National Socialists that both Jewish artists were forced to take. And so 'Bonjour Liberté' is a touching album in every respect. It invites you to swing and dream, and with its sometimes cheerful, sometimes melancholic tone, it awakens a longing for freedom and love of life. With a voice that gets under your skin!
