From the outside, the recording studio that United Artists had booked at Sound Makers on Manhattan's 57th Street didn’t look like a jungle; but on the afternoon of September 17, 1962, chaos reigned inside. Noise and commotion spread through the building’s corridors and elevators, even spilling out onto the sidewalk in front. Among the passing crowd, Edward Kennedy Ellington sprinted after Charles Mingus Jr., who had already packed up his bass and was making a getaway. The session’s producer, Alan Douglas, observed the scene through a window and, as you might guess, was far from pleased.

The Money Jungle session was not just a music recording; it was a collision of three great personalities, each representing a completely different approach to jazz. Ellington, a classicist of swing, Roach, a master of bebop, and Mingus, a symbol of expressionist jazz—their interaction and conflict created a unique musical chemistry that turned the album into a masterpiece.
