Music Journal, the brilliant third CD from Brazilian pianist and composer Marcelo Zarvos reveals his passion for elaborate musical journeys, legendary Brazilian folklore, rhythms and tempos. The gifted prodigy offers his sensibilities on "Forro en Curuipe" a stellar piece that affords a stunning display of Dorothy Lawson's great talent on cello and Peter Epstein's melodic soprano saxophone diversity enveloped in Zarvo's delightful piano virtuosity. Zarvos further exposes listeners to his Brazilian sensibilities and captures the frenetic energy of a Sao Paulo street on "Avenida Paulista." Here, he fuses bebop and samba and achieves his desired effects through the use of the samba's characteristic shuffling 2/4 rhythm. On "Gallop," Zarvos uses the gallope rhythm as a backdrop to emphasize Epstein's fleeting horn charts and Lawson's stellar cello to stimulate the listener's imaginary gallop on this musical journey. The quiet beauty of "One More Year" closes the program with its tranquil imagery and emotive musical forms. With exceptional accompaniment from Mauro Refosco on mallets and percussion, Chris Dahlgren on double bass and Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, Marcelo Zarvos delights listeners with this excellent mixed ensemble of classical and non-classical musicians in an appealing, natural setting which combines different elements of classical, jazz, Brazilian folk music and rhythms.
