Xenon Saxophone Quartet, Sergey Markin - Symphonic Dances (2024) [Hi-Res] [Dolby Atmos]

Emotional intensity and drama, joy of playing, high energy: on its second album, the Cologne-based Xenon Saxophone Quartet presents a rich palette of emotions and a different facet of musical expression with each work. In Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, for which the quartet is accompanied by pianist Sergey Markin, the five musicians fully express Rachmaninov's "Russian soul". Their recording of Franck's Prélude, Fugue et Variation brings the almost mystical character of the work to life, while Ligeti's Six Bagatelles reveal their deep avant-garde modernity. The recordings of Franck and Rachmaninov are based on new arrangements. In its arrangement of Rachmaninov's Late Romantic Dances, an outstanding work of literature for saxophone, which the composer himself had arranged for two pianos, the ensemble succeeds in transferring the power and emotional intensity of the orchestral original to its chamber music version. The Xenon Quartet also takes up the organ version of Franck's work and transfers it almost literally to the saxophone, albeit with a dynamic and sound development that is difficult to realize on an organ. Ligeti's Six Bagatelles are recorded in Fabian Oehrli's well-known arrangement authorized by the composer. In its passionate passages, the Xenon Saxophone Quartet explores the limits of ensemble playing in a confident and captivating manner.
