Foundation and Repertoire

Founded in 1931 and led by its visionary director, La Chanson Valaisanne is a mixed choir ensemble that passionately explores both classical polyphony—ancient and modern—and contemporary vocal music. This dedication to musical excellence has attracted many composers, enriching its folk repertoire. Among these notable contributors are Gustave Doret, Charles Haenni, Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, Paul Hindemith, Louis Broquet, Joseph Bovet, Emile De Ribaupierre, Darius Milhaud, and others.

Poets such as René Morax, Jean Graven, and R. M. Rülke have also inspired the ensemble with lyrical theatrical works, including La Servante d’Evolène, which achieved international acclaim at the Théâtre de Mézières. The purity and freshness of La Chanson Valaisanne’s soloists move listeners profoundly, free from any artifice.

An International Reputation

La Chanson Valaisanne has been welcomed with enthusiasm on Europe’s grand stages, including Paris, Rome, Vienna, Brussels, Barcelona, Florence, Milan, Naples, Athens, Marseille, Montpellier, Amsterdam, Bordeaux, Royan, and in major Swiss cities such as Geneva. In Geneva, the group collaborated with longtime friend Ernest Ansermet for multiple performances of the opera Les Armaillis by G. Doret and D. Baud-Bovy.

Honors and Mission

Honored with the Grand Prize of the City of Sion, La Chanson Valaisanne continues its mission tirelessly, celebrating the gentle reveries, devout emotions, mischievous irony, and country songs of its homeland. It remains faithful to the Valais, echoing the voices of ancestors, the wisdom of vintners and mountaineers, and the nobility of a heritage it serves with respect and love.
