French double bassist and vocalist Mélanie Loisel continues the path she began with her debut album Horst (2022, on the labels Pagans and La République des Granges). On her second record, Vêtue, she pushes her exploration of the double bass further, experimenting with sound processing and instrument preparation. Some of the seven pieces are built on rhythmic, percussive patterns, forming a multi-layered soundscape in which textures and altered timbres intertwine, and every harmonic resonates with the deep vibration of the bass frequencies.

Loisel’s solo writing retains its power but gains an improvisational, playful and slightly mischievous side. The album follows a more cohesive narrative thread: the pieces are filled with incantations and memories, and their energy is raw, both monumental and intimate. The voice has become more expressive, and the double bass playing more varied. The record’s imagery — rocks and clay, pebbles and a young girl, rabbits and a dry field — grows out of a child’s imagination.
