Review by Andy Kellman
Express Yourself: Charly's Funky Grooves is a decent compilation of late-'60s and early-'70s funk from a crate digger's perspective, featuring 16 tracks that aren't likely to be familiar with those not completely immersed in the style -- unless you're a hip-hop head who has been deep into that style since the dawn of the '90s; many of the picks have been sampled several times over. This is hardly the be-all, end-all, but it does include notables like Burning Spear's "S.O.U.L.," Young-Holt Unlimited's "Hey Pancho," Mary Jane Hooper's "I've Got Reasons," Maceo & All the King's Men's "Fo to Getcha," Skull Snaps' "It's a New Day," and Ann Sexton's "You're Losing Me."
