Joel Chadabe, a pioneer in interactive computer music, founded Intelligent Music in 1984 to make algorithmic compositional tools accessible to home studio users. Between 1986 and 1990, Intelligent Music released influential MIDI sequencing software, including M, Jam Factory, UpBeat, and an early version of Miller Puckette’s Max. These programs allowed real-time adjustments during algorithmic composition, a groundbreaking feature for the era.

The 1987 release of UpBeat: The Intelligent Rhythm Sequencer was particularly innovative, enabling users to send looping MIDI patterns to drum machines and make live adjustments. It also introduced intelligent control over individual drum sounds, including note density, timing, and velocity—features now standard in modern digital audio workstations.

This album honors Joel Chadabe's legacy and the creative impact of Intelligent Music, with gratitude extended to collaborators like David Zicarelli, Eric Ameres, and John Offenhartz, who played key roles in UpBeat's development.
