Maloya Jazz Xperianz - Mon Péi (2024)

After a physical-only launch at the end of last year, Babani Records is collaborating with Reunionese group Maloya Jazz Xperianz for the digital release of MJX’s first full-length LP, Mon Pei. After their first self-titled EP released in 2014, MJX sought to showcase more of their unique identity on a full-length project.

Maloya Jazz Xperianz is a melting pot of influences, mirroring its initiator Emy Potonié, a composer, saxophonist-flutist, and performer. The group consists of Noé Latchimy on piano, Rodolphe Celeste on guitar, Christophe Chrétien on drums, and Johan Saartave on bass. While most of the compositions are initially created by Emy, each member brings their own musical color, sensitivity, dynamism, and jazz to it! It's music that takes us on a journey through tradition and modernity while revealing the temperament of each individual through the notes.

The idea of playing jazz through a culturally driven perspective spoke to us as a label that seeks to promote every side of Indian Ocean cultural music. The blend of Reunion Island’s roots allows MJX to stand out as unique world and jazz music artists.
