The songs on The Secret Radio's debut album emerged between 2006 and 2011 when the band performed them in live venues around New York City. Some of those places such as The Living Room have now gone. The original lineup of musicians also went their separate ways but the music remained, much of it on the hard drive of the chief songwriter Damian Fowler. During the pandemic, Damian worked with producer and pianist Asen Doykin and guitarist Evgeny Bogomolov to rework select tracks, building on some of the original recordings, as well as adding new parts.
The integrity of the original sound and intention remains, a sort of harkening back to the past, while aiming to bring the songs into the present. If there's an underlying theme to this album it's reflected in the title of the album — Shortwave. A shortwave radio signal can travel thousands of miles across continents. The songs have traveled a long way from their early incarnations as demos recorded in a living room in Astoria to where they are today.
