Chris Varga’s album *Breathe* marks a significant moment for the vibraphonist and composer, who has spent over two decades shaping Seoul’s jazz scene after his early years in Chicago. Seizing an extended trip to the U.S. in 2024, he recorded this project with a top-tier quintet of longtime friends at Pro Musica Studio in Chicago.

Led by GRAMMY-winning bassist Clark Sommers, the ensemble includes guitarist Dave Miller, drummer Neil Hemphill, and saxophonist Geof Bradfield. The album blends Varga’s refined jazz sensibilities with subtle influences from 1980s pop, including nods to Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears.

*Breathe* features a collection of intricate originals, from the high-energy *Durantula*, a tribute to Kevin Durant, to the soulful 6/8 groove of the title track. Tracks like *Lid* highlight rhythmic complexity, while *Passing Remark* evokes Keith Jarrett’s American quartet. *TMI* injects a funky samba feel, and the closing *Gentle Vicissitudes* delivers a haunting, expressive finale.

With its nuanced compositions, strong ensemble chemistry, and genre-blending influences, *Breathe* cements Varga’s distinct musical voice and reintroduces him to U.S. jazz audiences.
