Lionel Bart (born Lionel Begleiter; 1930–1999) was a British composer, lyricist, and librettist, best known as the creator of the musical *Oliver!* (1960), which became an international hit and brought him worldwide fame.

Lionel Bart wrote the music and lyrics for the musical *Maggie May*, which premiered in 1964. The plot is based on the traditional Liverpool ballad of the same name and tells the story of dock workers and trade union disputes in Liverpool, focusing on the characters of Maggie May, a street prostitute, and her lover, a sailor named Pat Casey. The musical was praised for its portrayal of working-class life and its diverse musical styles, including ballads, choral numbers, and elements of rock and roll.
