Lost tapes by Holger Czukay, legendary co-founder of Can, have resurfaced after more than 30 years, revealing a meditative 1997 sound piece originally recorded "for free disposal." Now remastered and reimagined by die ANGEL (Ilpo Väisänen / Dirk Dresselhaus) and Zappi W. Diermaier of Faust, this rediscovered work blends futuristic textures, deep emotion, and abstract groove.Title: Gvoon - Brennung 1

The project originated in the 1990s when Czukay collaborated with techno artists and media pioneers like Arthur Schmidt (Gvoon), exploring cutting-edge digital tools like RealityEngine and body-tracking tech. Inspired by Schmidt’s past in GDR prisons, Czukay created “Gvoon-Brennung 1”—a sonic gift reflecting trauma and transformation. Forgotten for decades, the recording resurfaced when Schmidt built an art installation replicating a Stasi interrogation room.
Mastering engineer Dresselhaus recognized the tape's unique, timeless character—a "bluesy, cybernetic" groove—and carefully balanced historical fidelity with modern production in the updated “Gvoon-Version 1.”
The release pays tribute to Czukay’s innovation and spirit ahead of what would have been his 87th birthday in March 2025, marking a new chapter in the ongoing exploration of his sonic legacy.
