Kina - Kina (Expanded Edition) (2000)

Kina was formerly a member of the trio Brownstone who released the single "If You Love Me." Her self-titled solo debut draws comparisons to such pop/rock vocals as Dionne Farris and Tina Turner, but the singer/songwriter/producer has more than enough talent to make her own mark. "Girl From the Gutter" was an immediate add on the video play lists of MTV, VH1, and The Box. Its angry underdog theme of 'I'm mad and I'm not going to take it anymore' has blistering lyrics. Kina cools down on such on lovely ballads as the country-ish "Have a Cry," the airy "Still Here," and the acoustic guitar laced "Give and Take." The string laced/power chord pumper "I Love You" is reminiscent of '80s era Prince ("Raspberry Beret" and production on The Family). The joyous self-love ode "Me" is both inspiring and fortifying. This self-titled release is a Grade A debut from this adventurous singer/songwriter.
