Sir Peter Maxwell Davies began work on his parody opera Resurrection while studying at Princeton in the early 1960s, but it was not until the 1980s that he resumed
composing. Finally, it was staged in 1987. Her fierce diversity — although any stylistic push is deliberate — is aimed at a number of targets
(the state, the church, and the media) and is expressed in a dazzling but mask-like sequence of scenes, as well as through the black-comic stylization
of hymn tunes, marching bands, cloying waltzes, and banal television commercials.
The orchestra consists of individual brass instruments, including trumpet and French horn, as well as strings, as well as a brass band backstage.
Davis also incorporates the rock band into the instrumentation, using a variety of musical styles.
