Longtime California DIY stalwarts known for guitar music make weirdo electronic pop and it works so well that it’s better than the usual fare, or at least more interesting/essential in the year 2025. Ugh, the new full-length from Harry the Nightgown, is a sleek and bouncy set of optimistic yet somehow anxiety-inducing tracks brimming with a mix of brightness and absurdity, the musical equivalent of what happens when your iPhone gets too hot and the screen starts getting melty and weird. This is punky maximalism with a mad scientist twist, every eccentric interjection and glitched out beat sound carefully placed for impact and reaction. The precision with which these pinwheeling tunes have been sewn together is almost academic and ambient in its approach, as if the pure sound appreciators LEAVING RECORDS decided to put out pop music, which as it happens….
