A classic example of the power of the male vocalist in 70s New York Latin -- as Ismael Rivera represents himself as a simple working class Puerto Rican on the front and back covers of the record, but steps out with a tremendous sense of majesty on his vocals for the set! The instrumentation features a fair bit of timbales, clave, maracas, and guiro -- with only a bit of trumpet and saxophone to sweeten things up -- and Rivera's vocals soar wonderfully over all the tunes, inflecting the lyrics with an earthy sense of soul that's a far cry from the more staid romantic Latin singers of years back.
