On her third album Sunwise, Scottish smallpipes innovator Brìghde Chaimbeul deepens her exploration of tradition, ritual, and sonic experimentation. Following the acclaim of Carry Them With Us, she returns with an introspective, drone-rich record shaped by winter’s stillness and folkloric rhythms.

Mostly recorded solo, Sunwise features ancient melodies reimagined through minimalist arrangement, Chaimbeul’s sparse voice, and field recordings. Highlights include “A Chailleach,” a swirling invocation of the Celtic goddess of winter with Colin Stetson, “Duan,” a spoken-word Hogmanay rhyme performed by her father, and a haunting vocal duet with her brother in “The Rain is Wine & The Stones Are Cheese.”

With deep roots in the Gaelic tradition and a fearless experimental spirit, Sunwise is a living archive of resilience and reverence — music that listens to the land and speaks across generations.
