ABC Classic is proud to present the world premiere recording of the award-winning Requiem, by Australian composer Paul Stanhope. Featuring the vibrant voices of Sydney Chamber Choir, soloists Chloe Lankshear and Richard Butler and a top-flight wind ensemble plus harp and percussion, this recording under the baton of Sam Allchurch captures the beauty, strength and passion of this profoundly moving work.
Interweaving the traditional texts with contemporary poetry, Stanhope offers an uplifting and ultimately life-affirming music experience that brings together consolation, connection to country, commemoration and celebration. All the English language texts are written by female poets: Neela Nath Das from India, Mary Elizabeth Frye and Emily Dickinson (both American) and Australian Indigenous poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal. ‘I didn’t deliberately set out to do this,’ says Stanhope, ‘but instinctually was drawn to poetry that seemed a counterweight to the Mass texts.’
