Review
Robert Randolph is an amazing slide guitar player who is not afraid to put his own stamp on classic tunes or blast out a few of his own.
His band is amazing and the work they do on stage is inspiring. There is a music first attitude all the way as this concert contains no glitz or glam. Instead, the show features true musicians doing their best to perform their craft at the top of their abilities.
While primarily a blues band, Randolph has also found a huge following among jam band circles. His live effort should see him gaining an audience with among classic rock lovers, as this one contains killer guitar solos from start to finish.
The live effort sees the Family Band inviting several members of their extended family to jam along with them, as Susan Tedeschi appears on the Staple Singers tune I ll Take You There. Ryan Show and The Monophobic Horns join the band for the Earth Wind & Fire classic Shining Star. Blind Boy of Alabama Joey Williams sits in for If I Had My Way and a remake of Prince's Walk Don t Walk. The concert closes with the Jimi Hendrix classic Purple Haze.
While there are a lot of nods to other artists, Randolph makes each tune his own with his special way of playing the tunes. This is a great album that will remind one that greatness is not how high on the charts one goes but rather how well once learns and executes his craft. Something that Robert Randolph does quite well.
