The ‘First Lady of Jazz’ Rita Reys (1924-2013) started her singing career at the age of 16. That career took her on tours through Europe and later also to America. There she sang with well-known musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young and Jimmy Smith. Reason enough for a tribute!
Recently, the Dutch Jazz Archive found original arrangements by arranger Oliver Nelson (1932- 1975) of the sparkling album that Rita Reys recorded in 1965 together with Nelson. This album now has a worldwide cult status, if only because of the star line-up that plays on it.
The Jazz Orchestra wnow perform this music for the first time, together with contemporary Dutch jazz vocalists Fay Claassen, Anna Serierse and Esther Van Hees.
