The last time we checked in with Manchester’s Autocamper, I said the band was destined for a breakout moment. Well, I guess my credibility as a music blogger is on the line in 1, 2, 3, 4, because Autocamper’s debut LP is out today. The good news is that What Do You Do All Day? will sell itself to listeners. The challenge, of course, is getting it out to as many listeners as possible.
These listeners will find a record that bubbles with the kind of effortless melodies that stick in your head for days, powered by the perfectly balanced vocal interplay between Jack Harkins and Niamh Purtill. Their call-and-response dynamic feels completely natural and familiar—like overhearing an intimate conversation between old friends. If anything, lead track Again is like a reached-out hand: “Trust us, you’ll like this record.” And it’s absolutely true.
The real magic happens in the details: the interplay between the key lick and strummy guitars in the sweet and pretty Red Flowers, which also features a particularly impressive vocal performance from Purtill. Map Like A Leaf satisfies fans of bouncy snare drum double-taps, while playful organ work fuels the much-fun Dogsitting. Proper has quickly become my go-to song—it’s a perfectly executed hooky and punchy guitar pop song with an uplifting chorus.
Add one more reason why this should be Autocamper’s breakout moment: they have created music that pulls you away from your phone and back into the world of actual feelings. What Do You Do All Day? is out now on Slumberland and Safe Suburban Home Records.
