Following the success of Burn a Smudge, which reached the Top 10 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, Indigenous singer-songwriter Trent Agecoutay is set to release his new album “Uncle Trent and Friends. Legacy”. Legacy is a collection of songs that Trent’s dad, Jim Agecoutay, wrote or co-wrote with Trent posthumously. Trent watched his dad from a very young age, sit at the kitchen table and write songs. He always had a pot of coffee, a lit cigarette and an old tape recorder. Jim loved writing songs and creating. He made his living in bar rooms across western Canada for over forty years. The special part of Jim’s story is that he forged a career in night clubs starting in Saskatchewan in 1968, only a few short years after Indigenous people were legally allowed to enter the establishments. Jim was a residential and day school survivor, but it was music and family that healed Jim’s soul. Jim was Trent’s inspiration to start writing his own songs, and when he was 12, Trent found a bunch of work tapes in an old desk that had a ton of song ideas, half written songs and songs that Jim created, some of those songs were the actual spark of Trent’s musical journey. Those song ideas and Trent’s plan to record them was made possible with the help of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Calgary Arts Development and The Central Music Festival Society. Jim sadly passed away from cancer before the project was able to start, but his sons Bryce, and Trent, used the album as a way to work through their grief and reconnect with their dad in a spiritual way.
