äijiäl is the debut album by the Karelian band Veri, crafted in the swamps and forests of Karelia, the borderland between Finland and Russia. The music blends ancient spirits and legends with modern sounds, where traditional Karelian instruments and feminine vocals intertwine with angular electronics and dark rave energy. Each track is an interpretation of traditional material, channeling the cultural heritage of the Karelian people, whose Finno-Ugric language is spoken by about 60,000 people today.
