"Closeness" is the debut EP by Korean-Chilean American songwriter and producer mari park, hailing from St. Louis, Missouri. The album explores themes of intimacy versus isolation, drawing inspiration from e.e. cummings’ poem “somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond,” where the dual meaning of “close” (proximity and enclosure) shapes its narrative. The music blends ASMR-tinged vocals, digital artifacts, uncanny field recordings, and shifts between slowcore antipathy and glitch-feminist electro-pop fantasies. The opening track “closing” sets the tone, subverting the concept of endings and beginnings, with lyrics that glitch into distortion before reverting to a fragile voice, symbolizing strength through overcoming pain. The album speaks to a generation grappling with hopelessness, advocating for radical healing and empathy.
