Bochum Welt - JS (2025)

In the rose-tinted realms of their 1st album in 6 years a holy spirit of ’90s electronica collaborates with fashion house Jil Sander in signature, warmly emotive style and pattern.

‘JS’ marks over three decades since Bochum Welt secreted a distinctive form of acid-electro on Rephlex that would justifiably, but erroneously, be attributed to AFX and help shape the whole “braindance” sound. His music has since become a byword for that type of bittersweet melodic reverie and richly layered harmonies, and here lends itself to Christopher Simmonds’ visual campaign for Jil Sanders’ latest collection, as launched this summer at OHG Hamburg under creative direction of Simone Bellotti.

Three standout cuts of dreamlike texture, nostalgic hooks and lucid piquancy, ‘Crystal Night’, ‘Night’s Frost’, and ‘Wanderlust’ were utilised by Sanders’ team, and nestle here among the total 11 parts that tile up to a blissful half hour absorbed in the artist’s world. Other highlights include the amniotic throb and floating choral pads to ‘San Peder a Sent’, the dry-iced waft of ‘More Light (Escape Mix)’, cinematic yearn of ‘Winter Spirits’, and an ambient mix of ‘Wanderlust’ recalling Johnny Jewel’s best.
