New Traditions is a collection of pipe music, electronic music, mouth music and folk music from six emerging and prominent Scottish artists, including Brìghde Chaimbeul, Hoch Ta Moch and Norman Willmore.

The collection’s intent is similar to the work of Alan Lomax and Martyn Bennett: to consolidate ephemeral words in physical grooves, but also a desire to interpret. It started in Sutherland with a recording of The Waters of Kylesku and the fading Gaelic language, which has origins in nature, with each letter of the alphabet named after a tree. These versions have the greatest reverence for the originals at heart, but like the architecture of a great gallery, serve to protect and elevate the old songs in a new mode, ranging from intricately woven vocal harmonies to glitch songs, droning shanties and radically revised standards.
