Entre Ilhas - Macaronesia, Vol. 1 (2025)

Entre Ilhas is one of those projects that must be praised for its historical and conceptual relevance, being potentially the first collaboration to connect the dots between the several territories that are part of the Atlantic Ocean's Macaronesian archipelagos: Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira and Azores. The brainchild of Cape Verdean musician and producer Adê, who invited Canary Islands’ Pablo Quintana to help lead the project, Entre Ilhas aims to highlight both the cultural diversity of Macaronesia and the similarities between the islands. Strongly rooted in Cape Verdean and Canarian music traditions, this is a record where each song bears its own little universe, while establishing subtle connections between them. ‘Serteza’ is a fine example of how Cape Verdean music can find a way into Caribbean sounds (via Canary Islands), ‘Terra Querida’ blends tradition in modernity in Cape Verde, while ‘Aires del Atlántico’ is gorgeous, a sort of morna beautifully sang in Spanish by Julia Rodriguez. The trouble with the album is, of course, finding cohesion and keeping the bar high when exploring so many diverse references. A commendable and enjoyable effort, nevertheless.
