"El contrapàs vertical" is the result of a unique collaboration between French avant-garde composer Pascal Comelade and the traditional Catalan orchestra, Cobla Sant Jordi. On this album, Comelade deconstructs and reimagines the Sardana, the traditional dance of Catalonia, by merging his signature sound of toy instruments (pianos, guitars) with the powerful and archaic sound of the cobla's brass and woodwind instruments. The music oscillates between reverence for folk tradition and radical avant-garde experimentation. The album creates a tension between the old and the new, the popular and the avant-garde, resulting in a hypnotic and utterly original music that is both a tribute and a bold departure from traditional forms.
