Shallowater - God's Gonna Give You a Million Dollars (2025) [Hi-Res]

Shallowater are a Houston trio who play alternative country with a dusty, doomy feel, filtering West Texas twang through post-hardcore, grunge, noise rock, and emo to wind up with something called “raw dirtgaze.” Classic Americana informs their pared-back instrumental palette and plainspoken, quietly profound lyrics, but honky-tonkers they are most certainly not. Their soft, plodding cadences hold fast to the ’90s slowcore blueprint; their staggered solos emphasize uniform ferocity over fingerpicked precision; their placid, easy-rolling range rock arrangements have a tendency towards slow-motion, spontaneous combustion, so the scenic routes resemble psychological traps. Produced by Alex Farrar, (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), their debut is a must-cop for anyone into left-of-center lone rangers like Hayden Pedigo—who makes an appearance on the closer—or grange-friendly grungy types like Greet Death and Cloakroom. Giddy up, and play it loud.
